Images
Rock sound has included 1 image of a male 'Jacoby Shadd'. Mojo has also included 1 image of a male artist 'Bert Jansch'. From this trend I can infer that there are more male rock artists than females and magazines such as Rock Sound and Mojo may have a male target audience. Although there is a good female following, the genre is male dominated. Q magazine has included 1 image of the female pop artist Katy Perry as well as 4 page previews which reveal different male artists such as David Bowie and The Smiths. From this I can infer that pop is a genre which have a combination of male and female artists. Top of the pops have included an image of a male artist from the band JLS as well as an image of a fashion accessory along with an image of the magazine front cover. The genre of pop is mainstream and has a very diverse target audience however the pop genre has a typical target age of 16-21. On the other hand, Top Of The Pops is a magazine which is aimed at a younger target audience which may suggest why more images have been used as younger audiences are more likely to be interested in a magazine which is more visually appealing and present their favourite pop artists. In contrast to this, the Q magazine contents page appears to be more sophisticated reflected by the types of images that have been used. From this, I can conclude that a pop music magazine convention is to include more than one image to create a busy and interesting effect which I can take into consideration when developing my contents page.
Sections
Contents page 1 'Rock Sound' has 1 section called the 'Main Features' and has listed 9 different pages. Contents page 2 'Mojo' has 2 separate sections, which separate 'Features' and the 'Cover Story' with 7 different pages mentioned. 'Q' Magazine has only used 1 section called 'Features' and has included 9 different pages. On the other hand, 'Top of the pops', a pop magazine aimed at a young target audience has included 5 different sections: 'Wins and offers' 'We love boys' 'All about you' 'Celebs and gossip' and 'We love shopping' and have mentioned 32 different pages on the contents page. From this I can conclude that the Top of the pops magazine include more content to appeal and interest younger audiences where Q, Mojo and Rock Sound are more simple and straight forward for older target audiences. From this I can conclude that more sophisticated pop magazines such as Q tend to include fewer sections whereas pop music magazines such as Top Of The Tops include more sections to appeal to younger target audiences. I can consider creating a balance of columns and sections when developing my contents page to ensure my contents page is sophisticated yet still contains enough content to be visually appealing.
Columns
Rock sound, Mojo and Q have used 1 column whereas Top of the pops has used the rule of thirds to include more information about gossip, fashion and pop music on the contents page as well as making the contents page look more organised yet busy to catch younger audiences attention. On the other hand Rock sound and Mojo may have only included 1 column to keep the contents page straight to the point and has a more professional look for older audiences. I could consider combining these ideas when creating my own contents page as it is evident that younger audiences including teenagers are attracted to a larger amount of content however I will need to ensure my contents page is still sophisticated and organised.
Overall Design
'Q' and 'Mojo' both have the house style of red, white and black which creates a professional look to the contents page which I could consider using on my own contents page. It is a very eye catching combination of colours which will be useful when trying to attract younger audiences to my magazine but still keeps the overall design sophisticated yet bold. Whereas 'Rock Sound' has used black and white but have included blue which shows more diversity and originality. Blue is commonly associated with masculinity which also relates back to the rock genre and the male target audience. Top of the pops has used white and included yellow and pink as these are girly, feminine and popular colours that connote happiness and create a positive atmosphere which appeals to their young target audience aged 11-15 years. When creating my contents page, I can ensure that I have a balance between masculine and feminine colours so that I can appeal to both genders.
